OVIEDO, 10 de octubre. The news coming out of Asturias paints a concerning picture regarding the entrepreneurial landscape of the region. In August, the Principality emerged as the community with the most significant decline in new business formations, experiencing a staggering drop of 39.4% compared to the previous year. The latest figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE) illuminate that only 77 new companies were established during this month.
Significantly, the financial commitment involved in these new enterprises amounted to slightly over 2.1 million euros, reflecting a dramatic decrease of 72.07% from the same period last year. This decline indicates not only a reduction in the number of startups but also a noticeable retreat in investment levels within the region.
Among the 66 companies that ceased operations in August, a notable 64 did so voluntarily, while one dissolved due to a merger, and another for unspecified reasons. This trend raises questions about the stability and resilience of the current business environment in Asturias.
In contrast, other regions are displaying a more robust entrepreneurial spirit. The Basque Country, La Rioja, and Andalusia led the way with impressive growth rates of 24.07%, 22.22%, and 18.21% in new business creations, respectively. However, Asturias, along with Navarra and Murcia, found themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum, grappling with significant setbacks of 39.37%, 35.37%, and 31.19%, respectively.
When it comes to company dissolutions, La Rioja marked an alarming increase of 250%, followed by Asturias with a 144.44% rise, and Castilla-La Mancha at 28.57%. These figures contrast sharply with regions like the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, and the Canary Islands, which managed to report smaller declines of 41.1%, 40%, and 38.24%, respectively.
On a slightly more positive note, the number of businesses in Asturias that expanded their capital saw a remarkable increase of 68.4% in August, totaling 32 companies. However, even with this growth, the total capital raised during these expansions reached 7.26 million euros, which is still 23.4% lower than the figures recorded in August of the previous year.
